Ain't gonna happen anytime soon. Photo industry is full of anal retentive, pedantic, s/m types - and most of the time flush out scammers in a heartbeat (e.g. Sigma DP hoax with 3x4Mb touted as 12MB). Being stupid (or being perceived as stupid) is not a part of the mindset. For that reason hi-end segment of photo industry is mostly no- nonsense business. A fool can see the difference between two lenses and no marketing writeup can cover it. That difference can be a make or break for photographer's business.

Pricing structure has it's own rules. Although photo cameras are computers, their pricing does not follow Moore's law.
One should buy camera as soon as it comes out and sell it after two generations, because cameras keep their price throughout the life cycle.

Take for example price point of new D800. Retail is $3000. For that money buyer gets two products - SOTA photo camera and
mind-boggling video camera. With two or three D800s one can shoot a feature movie. (Compare this with the rental cost of RED camera)

I'd say, it's $1000 for the photo camera and $2000 for video camera and it is still freakin' deal.

Do you know the dealer markup on D800? Usual 50-60 % of audio world? Nah. 10%. Yes, dealer price is $2700. They make less than $300 gross on selling D800. It guarantees that there is no discount and also that dealer has to work hard to sell accessories and lenses along D800 to make a living.

Can you imagine any top tier company from audio world offering SOTA product at $3000 with 10% markup to dealers?

IMHO, that's where the difference comes from - audio business is filled with scammers and shysters and caters to clientele that often can not tell what they are buying.
